Snack supplies for stakeout: Takoyaki. They are fried round snacks with pieces of octopus in them.

Music choice to pass the time: Gagaku [Japanese court music]

Country description: People think we're all wearing kimonos and drinking sake and all running off to work in the morning. Really, people wear casual clothes usually, and are more likely to be drinking some kind of tea, or coffee, and drag themselves off to work in the morning.

Recreation plans: Sitting in a hot spring, then jumping into the sea.

Surveillance notes: It is hot and humid. The rainy season has just started, but we are having a break in the rains today. It makes you sweaty just moving the smallest distance. Everyone is trying to stay cool, so people who work in offices are wearing their short sleeve shirts and dress pants, and everyone else is in light clothing. Trains pull in and out of the station almost constantly. The station guards are busy making sure no one falls off the platform in front of the bullet train. Everywhere you look, someone is using a cell phone. Everyone has a different tune, so it is just a cacophony out here in the street. If you are lucky, you might see an itachi, a kind of ferret, at night.

Home life after work: The house is quite big. You take your shoes off in the entranceway, then step up into the house proper. The kitchen has a packed-earth floor and very high ceiling, which makes it very cold in winter. There is a well here, too, but we don't use it for drinking. The rooms have thick tatami mats on the floor. They are very comfortable to sit on. We eat at a low table sitting on the floor. The doors between rooms have a wooden frame which is covered with paper. The house is great in summer, but very cold in winter. Lots of bugs come into the house in the summer, too.
